What is hypnosis actually? Hypnosis is a voluntarily precipitated state of trance in which the unconscious is directly addressed. Our unconscious can be described as a hidden chamber in the brain, which controls our dreams and wishes, our behaviour, but also our fears. Both positive and negative experiences are stored in the unconscious. Hypnosis uses the unconscious’ ability to discern things and patterns, which we would not have recognised or noticed in a waking state. It can also be used to re-order or programme habitual patterns.
